📖 Step-by-step tutorial: How to Rotate and Flip Images Online for Free (2026 Guide)

Why do some of my photos appear sideways?

Phone and camera photos store orientation as EXIF metadata rather than rotating the actual pixels. Some apps and websites ignore this metadata, showing the image sideways or upside down. Rotating here bakes the correct orientation into the pixels themselves, so it displays correctly everywhere.

Does rotating reduce image quality?

90-degree rotations are lossless for the pixel data — pixels are just rearranged, not recalculated. The tool re-encodes the file on download though, so for maximum fidelity download as PNG, or accept the tiny recompression if you choose JPG.

What's the difference between rotate and flip?

Rotate turns the image like a steering wheel (90, 180, 270 degrees). Flip mirrors it like a reflection — horizontal flip swaps left and right (useful for selfies that appear mirrored), vertical flip swaps top and bottom. They're independent operations you can combine.

Can I rotate by an arbitrary angle like 15 degrees?

This tool rotates in 90-degree steps, which are lossless. Arbitrary-angle rotation requires resampling that softens the image and adds empty corner areas needing a background fill — for that, use a full photo editor instead.

Image Rotator — Complete Guide

Sideways photos are one of the most common image annoyances — you took a perfect portrait shot, but it displays lying on its side in some app. The Image Rotator fixes orientation in seconds with lossless 90-degree rotations and mirror flips, all processed privately in your browser.

How it works

Rotating by 90, 180 or 270 degrees simply remaps pixel positions — no interpolation, no quality loss in the pixel data itself. Flipping mirrors the pixel grid horizontally or vertically. The corrected orientation is written into the actual image data (not just metadata), so the result displays correctly in every app, browser and device, even ones that ignore EXIF orientation tags.

The EXIF orientation problem

When you take a photo with your phone held vertically, many cameras don't rotate the pixels — they just set an EXIF flag saying 'display this rotated.' Well-behaved software honors the flag; plenty of software doesn't, leaving you with sideways images on certain websites, email clients or older apps. The reliable fix is exactly what this tool does: physically rotate the pixels and reset the orientation flag, eliminating the ambiguity permanently.

Common use cases

Tips

Fix orientation as the first step in your editing workflow — before cropping, resizing or compressing — so all subsequent operations work on correctly oriented pixels. If an image needs both rotation and flipping, the order doesn't matter for the final result. And keep the original: if you later realize a flip was wrong (mirrored text is the classic giveaway), you can redo it from the source.
